3 Holistic Top Tips for Rehoming a Rescue Animal
Feb 21, 2025
Is there a new rescue animal in your home or one due to arrive? Are you concerned about how to help them to settle into their new home and family life? You’re not alone! I’m seeing and speaking to a lot of animal guardians, who are in need of some help and support in the early stages of adopting or fostering a rescue animal.
The good news is that there are some very simple holistic things you can do to help a rescue animal to feel secure and to cope with the transition into their new environment.
Here are my 3 top tips to help:
- Take things slowly. Many rescue animals have had months or more of stress, living in unusual surroundings and being separated from their original family. Taking the time to slowly show them the basic routines of the home and explaining to them why and when things are happening can be a huge relief for many animals. It’s amazing how they respond positively to being “kept in the loop” about daily events and family routines.
- Let them sleep if they need to! Many rescue animals are absolutely exhausted, both emotionally and mentally when they first arrive in their new home. It’s a good idea to let them sleep, because this is valuable processing and healing time for them, on all levels.
- Positive affirmations are so important. You may have just rehomed an animal who feels displaced, unsure, scared, out of sorts, anxious, worried or reactive and they need a special kind of reassurance to help them to feel safe. Here are 2 to try; “You are very safe” and “You are very loved”. Animals really respond to this phrasing, which is subtly different to “I love you”. Practice saying these out loud or in your head and see how your animal responds to you.
I’d love to hear how you get on with these holistic top tips.
